At Western Chances we support over 600 young people each year as part of our scholarship program. We’re delighted that many of our dedicated, motivated and passionate scholarship recipients and nominators have shared their stories with us.

For International Women’s Day this year we reflect on the big dreams and inspiration driving some of these remarkable women in the Western Chances community.

Ana, student, first scholarship  2014

“The dreams I hold for the future see me being involved in the performing arts; I hope to complete a degree in acting and then take my acquired knowledge with me into a career. I want to do this for a few reasons, but mostly because I am curious about people, their behaviour, and their reasons for doing. I hope, through a career of performing that I can learn to understand why we do what we do when faced with certain situations and moments in life, and become a more understanding person.”

Selena, student, first scholarship 2010

“There should be more programs that focus on encouraging girls to pursue a career in the STEM field. It is also beneficial to have a mentor to guide you along your journey. Do not be afraid to speak to people, try to get some insights from someone who works in the field that you are interested in. I believe that if you endeavour to do your best, keep at it, anything is possible.”

Christine, nominator, Student Enrichment Coordinator

“I have a great belief in young people, but not all of my students have the same opportunities. The great thing about Western Chances is the new opportunities that it opens for them. Not just the scholarships themselves.”

Lucinda , student, first scholarship 2013

“My big dream would be to improve communication within businesses by acting as the “go-to” person for all their communications. What jobs I embark on in the meantime, I do not know, all I know is that I’m keeping myself open to as many different areas of journalism as possible. It would be great one day to be in charge of publication content and a social media strategy of my own.”

Makayla, student, first scholarship 2015

“My big dream for the future is to be happy. To find myself, be comfortable in myself and be proud of myself. 2017 has been one of the hardest years of my life but at the end of it I just want to be those three things because if I am those three things then I've done something right and I can go on to do great things that I know I can do.”
